About this track

The Hay River Track is a 420 km extreme desert crossing that runs down the channel country of the northern Simpson Desert in the NT. This seldom-travelled alternative to main Simpson routes follows the Hay River system through soft sand and remote spinifex country, offering genuine isolation and scenic red-sand landscapes. It demands absolute self-sufficiency, experienced desert driving, and meticulous preparation — this is a track for hardened outback travellers only.

Highlights

  • Remote northern Simpson Desert crossing, rarely travelled
  • Soft sand driving down scenic Hay River channels
  • Extreme remoteness; nearest help is days away
  • Seasonal (May–Aug only); wet season impassable
  • Multiple permit requirements; confirm before departure
  • Essential: convoy, EPIRB, dual battery, recovery kit

What to expect

Predominantly soft sand throughout, ranging from gentle to challenging drifts. The track follows natural drainage lines and channel country, creating a flowing but demanding route. Water crossings are dry-season stable but require care. You'll encounter long stretches of corrugated sections and washboard. Isolation is genuine — no roadhouses, no phone coverage, no casual rescues. Navigation and vehicle preparation are non-negotiable.

Permits, prep & good to know

  • Permits: Permit (Atnetye) + Desert Parks — confirm current details before you go.
  • Surface / hazards: Soft sand.
  • Remoteness: Extreme — travel self-sufficient, ideally in convoy.
  • Carry an EPIRB or satellite communicator, recovery gear, extra fuel and water.

Permits required (Atnetye + Desert Parks); confirm current conditions and closures with NT Parks before departure. Strictly May–August (wet season closes the track). Fuel from Mt Dare or Birdsville only — carry full capacity and plan for sand drag. All water must be carried; no reliable sources en route. Travel as a minimum two-vehicle convoy with UHF, satellite comms and EPIRB. Full recovery kit, sand ladders, high-ratio gearing essential. Reduce tyre pressures significantly for soft sand. Camp away from tracks; pack all rubbish.
