Mereenie Loop
About this track
The Mereenie Loop is a 200 km dirt connector through the Red Centre that links Kings Canyon to the West MacDonnells, running across Aboriginal land between Hermannsburg and Kings Canyon Road. Graded Easy 4WD, it's a straightforward day run with heavy corrugations but no serious technical sections — ideal for crews wanting to combine the canyon with MacDonnell ranges exploration without backtracking to Alice Springs. The track cuts through classic red outback country and demands a transit pass, making it a proper outback experience rather than a casual drive.
Highlights
- Heavy corrugations throughout — set pace and tyre pressure accordingly
- West MacDonnell ranges and river red gums en route
- Transit through Aboriginal land — respect access conditions and closures
- Fuel options at Kings Canyon and Hermannsburg only
- Day run for experienced 4WD travellers; poor visibility in dust
- Seasonal closures possible in wet season — confirm before departure
What to expect
Corrugated dirt throughout, unshaded and exposed. No water crossings or jump-ups, but the washboard surface demands steady low-range work and concentration — not technical, but relentless. Country is open red earth and scattered mulga. No facilities mid-track. Moderate remoteness: recovery trucks available but not immediate. Dust clouds from other vehicles reduce visibility; travel early or with convoy spacing.
