Outback Way (Great Central Road)
About this track
The Outback Way (Great Central Road) is Australia's longest shortcut: a 1100 km moderate 4WD track spanning Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland from Laverton to Winton. It cuts through the red heart of the continent, passing Uluru and the Docker River, and demands Aboriginal-land permits, serious corrugation endurance and full self-sufficiency. This is a genuine outback crossing, not a tourist drive—iconic for its remoteness, stark beauty and the sheer achievement of linking three states across spinifex country.
Highlights
- Uluru and Kata Tjuta viewpoints en route
- Docker River Aboriginal community crossing
- Relentless corrugations; high-clearance vehicle essential
- Four fuel stops over 1100 km; plan stops carefully
- Remote desert with minimal services or support
- Convoy travel strongly recommended; EPIRB mandatory
What to expect
Expect corrugated dirt throughout, with washboard surfaces that demand slow speeds and fatigue management. Terrain is spinifex and red-earth desert; creek crossings are generally dry but can be boggy in wet season. The track is wide and well-used but unrelenting—speeds average 40–60 km/h. Remoteness is genuine: nearest help is hours away. Dust and heat are constant. Navigation is straightforward but require maps and GPS; mobile coverage is absent across most of the route.
Permits, prep & good to know
- Permits: Yes — Aboriginal-land permits (WA/NT) — confirm current details before you go.
- Surface / hazards: Corrugations.
- Remoteness: High — travel self-sufficient, ideally in convoy.
- Carry an EPIRB or satellite communicator, recovery gear, extra fuel and water.
Aboriginal permits are required for WA and NT sections—arrange these well before departure through relevant land councils. The track is closed or treacherous during wet season (November–March); travel April to October. Carry 200+ litres of water minimum, jerry cans for fuel, full recovery kit, sand flags, spare tyres and tubes. Convoy travel is essential; establish UHF comms and carry an EPIRB. Fuel stops are few and far between—confirm fuel availability at Laverton, Warburton, Warakurna and Yulara before you leave. Camp responsibly and pack out all waste.
