Savannah Way (Gulf section)
About this track
The Savannah Way's Gulf section is a 900 km moderate 4WD crossing between Normanton, QLD and Borroloola, NT through tropical savannah. This is a working stock route and touring track across remote Gulf country, famous for its red corrugated dirt, river crossings and the dramatic limestone gorges of Lawn Hill (Boodjamulla) National Park. It's iconic outback driving: isolated, seasonally locked by wet weather, and demands self-sufficiency and convoy travel.
Highlights
- Relentless corrugations; speed and suspension endurance test
- Lawn Hill/Boodjamulla gorge—walk through red cliffs and freshwater pools
- Multiple river crossings; seasonal water levels dictate timing
- High remoteness; fuel/water stops 200+ km apart
- Wet season (Nov–Apr) closures; plan May–Oct only
- Stock route heritage; encounter cattle and pastoral landscape
What to expect
Corrugated dirt throughout, rough enough to demand low-range work in patches. River crossings vary seasonally—reconnaissance essential after rain. Savannah woodland, spinifex and red earth under a big sky. Driving is relentless and concentration-heavy; corrugations punish speed and poor suspension. Isolation is genuine: 200–300 km between fuel and water stops. No towns, limited phone coverage. Expect dust, heat and occasional washouts mid-season.
Permits, prep & good to know
- Permits: No — confirm current details before you go.
- Surface / hazards: Corrugations, crossings.
- Remoteness: High — travel self-sufficient, ideally in convoy.
- Carry an EPIRB or satellite communicator, recovery gear, extra fuel and water.
No permits required. Strictly May–October; November–April closures are hard—roads become impassable mud. Fuel at Normanton and Borroloola only; carry jerry cans. Water is essential cargo; creeks are unreliable. Convoy travel strongly recommended in this remoteness. Carry recovery gear, sand flags, dual battery setup and UHF. EPIRB advised. Check road conditions before departure with local authorities. Respect pastoral property; close gates, camp responsibly. Tyre pressures matter on corrugations—run lower pressures with extra water and pump.
