About this walking route

The Australian Alps Walking Track is a demanding 650 km traverse from Walhalla in Victoria through the high country to Tharwa near Canberra, taking 5–8 weeks depending on fitness and conditions. This is serious alpine walking across remote ridgelines, sub-alpine plateaus and exposed terrain, crossing into NSW and skirting Australia's highest peaks. Snow, exposed weather and total self-sufficiency demand mountain experience, route-finding skill and respect for a landscape that can turn hostile quickly.

Highlights

  • Continuous alpine ridge and plateau walking through Victoria and NSW
  • Summit or traverse near Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak
  • Remote high-country wilderness with minimal shelter or resupply
  • Seasonal snow, blizzard risk and exposure on open ridgelines
  • Pristine alpine lakes, moorland and weathered granite country

What to expect

Rugged, undulating alpine terrain with steep ascents and descents across button grass moorland, exposed ridges and granite outcrops. Surfaces range from rocky track to unmarked ridgeline navigation. Weather is unpredictable: summer brings UV intensity and afternoon storms; snow and whiteout conditions occur even in shoulder seasons. Most days involve 15–25 km of slow, grinding climbing. Solitude is near-total; resupply opportunities are rare.

Good to know

Summer (December–February) offers the best window, but snow persists into November and returns by March. Navigation skill, map reading and compass work are essential; sections are unmarked. Permits and planning advice must be checked with Parks Victoria, NSW National Parks and ACT Parks. Water sources exist but spacing is unpredictable. Carry full camping gear and food for multi-day stretches. Check current closures, snow conditions and fire restrictions before departure. This walk demands strong fitness, alpine experience and self-reliance.
