About this walking route

Bald Rock is Australia's second-largest granite monolith, rising dramatically from the New England tableland on the NSW–Queensland border. The 5 km walk climbs steadily through open forest to the base, then scrambles up exposed granite slabs to the 1267 m summit. On clear days, views sweep across the New England plateau and into Queensland's Granite Belt—a rewarding half-day walk that demands respect for the rock and weather.

Highlights

  • Scramble bare granite slabs to summit
  • 360° views across New England plateau
  • Second-largest monolith in Australia
  • Open-rock exposure; weather changes fast
  • Moderate fitness required for final pitch

What to expect

Steady climb through dry eucalypt woodland on a well-formed track to the granite base. The final ascent is a steep, exposed scramble up smooth and sometimes sloping rock—requiring hands and good footwear. Sections are exposed to wind and sun. Weather deteriorates quickly at altitude; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. The rock can be slippery when wet.

Good to know

Visit April–October for stable weather; summer brings heat and storms. No permit required, but check access with local ranger station beforehand. Bring plenty of water, sun protection and sturdy hiking boots with good grip. Avoid the walk in wet conditions or high wind. The final slabs are unforgiving—this is not a walk to rush. Leave no trace on the granite; respect the landscape's prominence in the region.
