Coast Track (Royal NP)
About this walking route
The Coast Track is Sydney's most rewarding short bushwalk: a 26 km coastal traverse through Royal National Park from Bundeena to Otford over two days. You'll walk clifftop heathland with sweeping ocean views, drop to sheltered coves and rock pools, and camp at Gerthewain or Burning Palms. The track is well-marked and graded moderate, making it accessible to reasonably fit walkers seeking drama without serious alpine commitment. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions; summer is hot, winter can be wet.
Highlights
- Wedding Cake Rock natural limestone formation and lookout
- Figure Eight Pools — tidal rock pools for swimming and wading
- Clifftop heathland with ocean vistas and whale migrations
- Sheltered campsites and creek water access
- Varied terrain: coastal paths, sandy beaches, rock scrambles
What to expect
Mostly well-maintained track alternating between exposed clifftop heath, forested gullies and beach sections. Elevation gain is moderate but spread across the day; no steep pitches. Surfaces range from packed earth to sand and rocky foreshore. Weather exposure on ridges means wind and sun; creeks provide reliable water. Swimming holes reward morning swims. The overnight camp is basic but scenic, with other walkers present in peak seasons.
Good to know
Best walked September–November or March–May; avoid summer heat and winter storms. Book campsites ahead via NSW National Parks (fees apply). The walk is one-way; arrange shuttle transport between Bundeena and Otford trailheads, or walk out the same day (possible for fit walkers). Carry 2–3 litres water capacity. Camp stoves only; no wood fires. Leave no rubbish and respect the park's Dharawal Country.
