About this walking route

The Dove Lake Circuit is Tasmania's most accessible introduction to the alpine landscape of Cradle Mountain. This 6 km boardwalked loop circles the lake beneath the distinctive peak, offering unrestricted views of the mountain's craggy summit and reflections in the water. Most walkers complete it in 2–3 hours at a steady pace. The track is well-maintained and heavily used, making it ideal for families, less experienced walkers, or anyone wanting a short mountain experience without technical difficulty or isolation.

Highlights

  • Cradle Mountain reflected in still lake water
  • Boardwalk through subalpine scrub and moorland
  • Panoramic views of Tasmania's most iconic peak
  • Alpine flora and bird life at accessible level
  • High-use, reliable track in any season

What to expect

A flat to gently rolling circuit on boardwalk and formed track, mostly level around the lake's edge. Terrain is moorland and low scrub; footing is secure. Weather in the Cradle Mountain region changes rapidly—expect cold wind, rain, or cloud even in summer. The walk is popular and rarely lonely. Sections can be muddy after rain, and wind can be gusty on exposed stretches. Typical experience: moderate pace, good views when clear, straightforward navigation.

Good to know

Walk year-round, but summer (December–February) offers the best weather and longest daylight. Winter brings snow at altitude and shorter days. Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park charges entry fees; check current rates and opening status with Parks Tasmania. The carpark at Dove Lake can fill by mid-morning in peak season. Bring layers, waterproof jacket, and sturdy footwear. Water is not available on the track; carry what you need. No permit required for day walks. Respect the alpine environment: stay on track and take rubbish with you.
