Deep Creek Coast
About this walking route
The Deep Creek Coast walk tackles the dramatic clifftop terrain where the Heysen Trail meets the Southern Ocean on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Over two days, you'll descend steep gullies to isolated beaches, pass seasonal waterfalls, and traverse windswept headlands with views across to Kangaroo Island. This is serious coastal walking—exposed cliffs, slippery descents and strong weather are the norm, not the exception.
Highlights
- Clifftop vistas to Kangaroo Island and Southern Ocean
- Seasonal waterfalls cascading to remote beaches
- Steep gully descents requiring care and fitness
- Heysen Trail connection through native vegetation
- Isolated beach camps with few other walkers
What to expect
Exposed clifftop sections with strong coastal winds, followed by steep and often slippery descents into vegetated gullies. Terrain is mixed—rocky outcrops, buttongrass-like vegetation, loose scree and sand. Gradients are sharp in places. Weather is changeable and cold year-round; the cliffs offer no shelter. Plan for slow progress on technical sections. Beaches are sandy and remote.
Good to know
Walk autumn to spring when water is reliable and weather less severe (though still unpredictable). Check current conditions and closures with Fleurieu Peninsula visitor services beforehand. Carry plenty of water—creek flow is seasonal and unreliable. This is remote coastal country; be self-sufficient and prepared for sudden weather changes. Camp ethically, pack all waste. Good fitness and careful footwork essential on descents.
