About this walking route

The Grampians Peaks Trail is a demanding 160 km end-to-end traverse through Victoria's iconic sandstone ranges, running from Mt Zero in the north to Dunkeld in the south over 13 days. This walk strings together the region's finest peaks—including the Balconies, Formartine Peak and Mt William—across rugged ridgelines and through deep valleys, with nights spent at designated hike-in camps. Expect steep climbs, fixed ladders on exposed sections, and sweeping views across the Grampians and out to the western plains. It's a serious undertaking for fit, experienced walkers.

Highlights

  • Sandstone peaks with fixed ladders and exposure
  • Mt William summit and panoramic ridge walking
  • Hike-in camps in backcountry valleys
  • The Balconies and northern range highlights
  • End-to-end traverse of Gariwerd massif
  • Wildflower displays in spring

What to expect

Rocky, steep terrain with frequent elevation gains and descents across sandstone ridges. Track conditions vary from well-formed to rough and rooty; some sections involve ladders and scrambles on exposed sections requiring sure footing. Weather is changeable—spring and autumn can bring cold, wet days; summer heat affects water availability. The experience is remote and self-reliant; navigation can be challenging in poor visibility. Most days involve 12–15 km with significant climbing.

Good to know

Book well ahead through Parks Victoria; this is a permit-based, popular walk with limited camp spots. Spring (September–October) and autumn (April–May) are ideal; avoid summer heat and winter cold. You'll need solid fitness, navigation skills and experience with multi-day walking. Water sources are limited—check availability with the park authority. One-way walk; arrange shuttle transport between Mt Zero and Dunkeld. Respect the cultural significance of Gariwerd to the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung peoples.
