K'gari Great Walk
About this walking route
The K'gari Great Walk traverses the world's largest sand island over six to eight days, covering 90 km of soft sand tracks, perched freshwater lakes, and pristine beach. You'll walk through towering rainforest rooted improbably in sand, camp in remote locations, and experience one of Australia's most unusual ecosystems where the landscape shifts constantly beneath your feet. This is a genuinely remote bushwalk requiring solid fitness and self-sufficiency, with dingoes present and minimal facilities beyond what you carry.
Highlights
- Perched lakes surrounded by rainforest on sand
- Walk long stretches of empty ocean beach
- Towering kauri and hoop pines in sand-rooted forest
- Remote wilderness camping away from day visitors
- Encounter wild dingoes in their natural habitat
What to expect
Relentless soft sand underfoot — walking is slower and more tiring than on conventional tracks. Terrain alternates between beach (hard-packed at low tide), soft sand forest paths, and dune crossings. Gradients are gentle but accumulated sand resistance drains fitness. Weather is subtropical; summer brings heat and humidity, autumn and spring are preferable. Expect isolation, minimal shade on exposed sections, and the constant sense of walking on an island genuinely in flux.
Good to know
Walk April to September for cooler conditions and lower rainfall. A permit and booking are required through the QLD Parks authority — secure these well ahead. This is a one-way walk; arrange return transport from the northern trailhead. Carry all water or know reliable lake locations. Dingoes are present; store food properly and respect wildlife. The soft sand means extra fitness is needed; train on sand if possible. Leave no trace on this fragile island ecosystem.
