About this walking route

The Kings Canyon Rim Walk loops 6 km around the rim of a spectacular sandstone gorge in Watarrka National Park, climbing steeply through beehive domes and descending to the Garden of Eden waterhole. This is a popular, well-maintained half-day walk that showcases the Red Centre's geological drama: sheer canyon walls, ancient rock formations and a permanent freshwater pool in arid country. Start early to beat the heat and enjoy the landscape in the cool.

Highlights

  • Sheer sandstone canyon walls rising 270 metres
  • Garden of Eden waterhole, permanent and swimmable
  • Beehive domes of the Lost City rock formation
  • Sweeping views across the West MacDonnell Ranges
  • Steep descent into and climb out of the canyon

What to expect

A circuit walk with a steep 400-metre climb early on, rewarded by top-of-rim views and a dramatic descent into the canyon floor. The track is rocky, stepped and loose in places. Summer heat (November–March) is severe; even in winter, direct sun reflects off stone. Allow 3–4 hours. The walk is exposed in parts; fitness and sure footedness help.

Good to know

Visit March to October; May to August is coolest. Start before 7 am to avoid midday heat. There is a day-use fee and no overnight camping on the rim. Water is scarce on the walk; carry 2–3 litres. The Garden of Eden pool is permanent but can be crowded. Check park alerts for closures and heat warnings. Respect the West MacDonnell Ranges' cultural significance to Aranda Traditional Owners.
