About this walking route

The Larapinta Trail is a 223 km desert traverse through the Tjoritja/West MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs. This challenging 12–16 day walk follows quartzite ridgelines and descends into gorges with permanent waterholes, offering an immersive experience of the Red Centre's rugged interior. The trail is walked section-by-section or end-to-end in the cooler months (April–September) and demands solid fitness, route-finding skill and self-sufficiency in remote country. It's a serious undertaking that rewards walkers with solitude, stark beauty and the texture of this ancient landscape.

Highlights

  • Quartzite ridgelines with expansive desert vistas
  • Permanent waterholes in scenic gorges
  • Remote 12-section desert traverse
  • Tjoritja/West MacDonnells geological drama
  • Cooler season desert walking at scale

What to expect

Steep, rocky ascents and descents on quartzite ridges, then navigation through gullies and creek beds to waterholes. Tracks are marked but require attention; some sections are rough and loose. Daytime temperatures range from cool (15–20°C) in winter to warm (25–30°C) in shoulder months. The landscape is exposed; water is scarce between permanent holes. Expect big days, self-navigation, primitive camping and the physical and mental demands of walking alone or in small groups in remote desert ranges.

Good to know

Walk April–September; winter is essential. Permits and detailed section notes are required—contact the managing park authority (Parks and Wildlife, NT). Most walkers arrange transport between trailheads. Carry a reliable map, GPS and compass; navigation is your responsibility. Water sources are fixed; plan daily distances around them. Fitness must be high; this is not a gentle trail. Camp only at designated sites. Leave no trace. Check current closures and conditions before departure.
