Light to Light Walk
About this walking route
The Light to Light Walk traces 30 km of NSW's far south coast between Boyds Tower and Green Cape lighthouse, threading red tessellated cliffs, sheltered coves and windswept headlands. This 2–3 day moderate walk rewards steady legs with dramatic coastal geology, seasonal whale migrations and a real sense of remoteness in Ben Boyd National Park. The track is well-maintained but exposed; weather can shift quickly and water carries are substantial.
Highlights
- Red tessellated cliff formations and tidal rock pools
- Seasonal humpback and southern right whales (May–November)
- Green Cape lighthouse and historic Boyds Tower
- Sheltered beaches and coastal heathland
- Largely isolated headland walking with ocean views
What to expect
Mostly coastal trail following cliff edges, sandy beaches and rocky outcrops. Terrain is uneven—expect scrambling, steep descents and ascents, and exposed sections where wind and waves demand care. Surfaces vary from packed sand to rocky paths. Weather is highly changeable; coastal conditions bring wind, fog and occasional rain. The walk feels remote and quiet, with minimal facilities between endpoints.
Good to know
Best walked May to November (whale season and settled weather). Check Ben Boyd NP website for current track conditions, closures and any permit requirements. Water is scarce—carry adequate supplies or plan refills carefully. The walk is linear and one-way; arrange transport between trailheads or use shuttle services if available (confirm locally). Moderate fitness required. Camp only in designated areas; pack out all waste and respect the rugged, windswept character of this headland country.
