Main Range Walk
About this walking route
The Main Range Walk is a demanding 22 km alpine loop threading across Australia's highest peaks. Starting from the Thredbo village trailhead, it climbs steeply to Blue Lake, traverses exposed ridgeline past Carruthers Peak and Mt Kosciuszko, then descends back through tussock and alpine scrub. Only for fit walkers in good weather; underestimate the alpine conditions at your peril.
Highlights
- Blue Lake — pristine glacial tarn in rocky cirque
- Carruthers Peak ridge walk with vast views east and west
- Mt Kosciuszko summit, Australia's highest point
- Wildflowers and alpine moorland in summer months
- Exposed ridgeline demands respect and preparation
What to expect
Steep initial climb on well-marked track gaining 400+ metres quickly. Alpine ridge walking is exposed and weather-dependent; wind, fog and cold arrive fast. Terrain shifts between rock, tussock and scree. Minimal shelter once above treeline. Summer offers 8–10 hour round trip; other seasons add snow, ice and whiteout risk. Strong fitness essential.
Good to know
Summer (December–February) is safest; avoid winter unless experienced in alpine conditions. Start early. Check forecasts and park alerts before setting out—turnaround in bad weather without hesitation. Bring water, layers, wind/rain jacket, sun protection. High UV and cold winds combined. No huts on the loop; this is day-walk only. Respect park closures and erosion—stay on track. Mobile reception unreliable.
