Mount Feathertop via Razorback
About this walking route
Mount Feathertop via the Razorback is Victoria's premier alpine ridge walk, tackling the state's second-highest peak (1922 m) along one of Australia's most dramatic and exposed ridgelines. The 22 km return from Mount Hotham demands fitness, scrambling ability and respect for fast-changing alpine weather. This is a serious one-day push or comfortable two-day outing with a hut stop, offering unrelenting views across the High Country and into New South Wales.
Highlights
- Exposed Razorback ridge with vertiginous drops either side
- Mount Feathertop summit views across Victoria's alpine spine
- Scrambling sections requiring hands-on rock work
- Subalpine terrain: alpine herb fields and rocky outcrops
- Potential two-day option with hut accommodation mid-route
What to expect
A sustained ridge walk combining steep ascent, technical scrambling and sustained exposure. Terrain shifts from rocky track to open ridgeline with scramble sections where hands are needed. Weather dominates the experience—clear mornings turn to cloud and wind rapidly. Expect thin, variable ground (rock, scree, alpine vegetation), strong UV exposure, and the constant physical and mental demand of airy terrain. Not a walk to attempt in poor visibility.
Good to know
Summer and early autumn (Dec–Mar) offer the best window; snow closes the route May–Oct. Feathertop is popular and track-marked, but the Razorback demands scrambling experience and confidence at height. Carry extra water; alpine sources are unreliable. Start early. Check Alpine National Park for current conditions, hut bookings and closures. Groups should move efficiently—turnaround discipline is essential if weather deteriorates. Leave no trace in this fragile alpine ecosystem.
