About this walking route

The Tarn Shelf circuit is a moderate alpine walk in central Tasmania's Mount Field National Park, circling a chain of glacial tarns and button-grass plains above Lake Dobson. The 12 km loop climbs to around 1,100 m, revealing the sculpted geology of Tasmania's last glaciation. Deciduous fagus woodland turns brilliant gold in autumn, while the open tarns offer clear reflection pools and mountain views. Allow 5–6 hours; the track is well-marked but exposed to wind and rapid weather change at altitude.

Highlights

  • Glacial tarns reflecting alpine peaks
  • Deciduous fagus golden in autumn
  • Open buttongrass plains, 360° views
  • Ponds and waterbirds in subalpine zone
  • Well-graded track, mostly above treeline

What to expect

A steady climb from Lake Dobson up rocky, grassy terrain to the tarn shelf; later walking through low fagus scrub and across boggy buttongrass flats. Sections are exposed. The track is well-formed and marked. Expect cool, windy conditions; weather can turn quickly. Some wet patches, especially after rain. The circuit returns via lookouts over Lake Dobson and the plains below.

Good to know

Best walked March–May (autumn fagus colour) or December–February (stable snow-free conditions). Summer can be wet; snow closes the walk June–August. No permits or fees beyond park entry. Carry water, as tarns are not reliable. Wear layers and waterproofs; afternoon winds are common. Start early. Leave no trace; stay on track through fragile alpine vegetation.
