About this walking route

Mount Remarkable's Alligator Gorge circuit combines a dramatic gorge walk with a climb to the ridge tops of the southern Flinders. The route threads through narrow red quartzite walls, crosses creekbeds, then climbs steadily to open range country with wide views across the plains. This is a full day's walk suited to fit walkers comfortable with rough terrain and creek crossings. The Flinders landscape here shifts from intimate gorge to exposed ridge—a rewarding contrast on a moderate but substantial outing.

Highlights

  • Narrow red quartzite gorge with creek scrambling
  • Steep climb from gorge floor to ridge saddle
  • Open ridge-top walking with plains views
  • Spring wildflowers and creek-dependent green pockets
  • Relative solitude outside school holidays

What to expect

Expect a mix of terrain: initial creek-bed scrambling with rock hopping through the gorge's narrow sections, then a steep, sometimes loose climb up to the saddle. The upper section follows well-marked track across open ridgeline with short grass and scattered rock. Creek water levels vary; after rain, crossings demand care. Weather changes fast in the Flinders—afternoon wind and sun exposure on the ridge are typical. Fitness and scrambling comfort matter more than technical skill.

Good to know

Walk March to May or September to November for best conditions; summer heat and creek flow make planning essential. No permit needed for day walks; check Mount Remarkable NP website for current track status, closures and parking details. Carry 2–3 litres water and don't rely on permanent creek flow. Start early to finish before afternoon wind picks up. The walk is not one-way; a shuttle is unnecessary. Respect the park—stay on track, pack out all rubbish.
