Mount Sonder
About this walking route
Mount Sonder is the final peak on the Larapinta Trail and one of the West MacDonnells' most rewarding summits. The 16 km return from Redbank Gorge climbs steeply through rocky terrain to 1380 m, typically tackled as a pre-dawn start to reach the summit for sunrise. The panorama across the MacDonnell Ranges and West MacDonnell Gorge justifies the early start and solid fitness required.
Highlights
- Sunrise views across the MacDonnell Ranges
- West MacDonnell Gorge and red desert panorama
- Final Larapinta Trail summit experience
- Rocky scramble with sustained elevation gain
- Rewarding 360-degree mountain vistas
What to expect
Steep, rocky ascent gaining 500 m elevation with loose stone underfoot and exposed sections requiring care. Granite boulders and scree dominate the upper track. Thin air at altitude and exposed ridges mean wind and temperature swings are real; dawn and dusk are cold. The descent is equally technical. Allow 6–8 hours round trip depending on fitness and photo stops.
Good to know
Start well before dawn (2–3 am from camp) to summit near sunrise. Best April–September; avoid Dec–Feb heat. Redbank Gorge car park is the trailhead; check Parks NT for current track conditions, closures and any permit requirements. Carry 2–3 litres water (scarce on peak). Headtorch essential. This is a serious, exposed summit walk—solid fitness and scrambling comfort required.
