About this walking route

Mount Warning, or Wollumbin, is a prominent volcanic peak in the Tweed region of NSW. The summit track is closed at the request of its Aboriginal custodians, the Bundjalung people. However, the surrounding caldera landscape remains accessible via numerous rainforest walks that showcase the geology and biodiversity of this ancient volcanic system. The area offers excellent alternatives for keen walkers seeking subtropical rainforest and views across the caldera.

Highlights

  • Ancient volcanic caldera with dramatic rim geology
  • Subtropical rainforest with ferns, native trees and wildlife
  • Multiple alternative walks around the caldera slopes
  • Scenic views across the volcanic landscape
  • Respect Traditional-Owner connection to Wollumbin

What to expect

Rainforest tracks with moderate grades, rocky sections and tree roots underfoot. Subtropical climate means wet conditions year-round; expect humidity and occasional heavy rainfall. Sections can be steep but most alternative walks avoid the steepest ascent. Canopy cover provides shade. Allow extra time for muddy patches and slippery surfaces after rain. The caldera walk offers diverse views without requiring the closed summit push.

Good to know

Visit May to September for drier conditions. Check NSW National Parks website for current track status, closures and alternative route details before planning. Respect the closure of the summit track—it reflects Bundjalung cultural protocols. Bring adequate water; streams are available but treat before drinking. Wear sturdy, water-resistant boots. Park at designated car parks; note that some facilities may be subject to seasonal changes. Leave no trace and stay on marked tracks.
