Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk
About this walking route
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk is a 58 km trail threading through the Blackall Range's subtropical rainforest and eucalypt woodlands, connecting Kondalilla and Mapleton Falls over four days. The walk traverses varied terrain from cool, wet gullies to open ridgelines with expansive views across the hinterland to the coast. It's a moderate walk suited to fit walkers comfortable with some steep sections and varied conditions, offering a genuine taste of south-east Queensland's inland landscape without the alpine drama of Tasmania or the top end.
Highlights
- Cool subtropical rainforest with tree ferns and running water
- Eucalypt ridges with coast-to-range views
- Kondalilla and Mapleton Falls as bookend destinations
- Blackall Range geology and native wildlife habitat
- Hinterland villages accessible for resupply and accommodation
- Moderate grades manageable for fit, experienced walkers
What to expect
Expect steep ascents and descents through rainforest gullies alongside creek beds, then more open walking on ridgelines through dry eucalypt forest. The track surface varies from muddy forest floor to rocky creek crossings and firmer ridge paths. Weather is subtropical: warm, humid days with afternoon thunderstorm risk in summer; cooler and drier April–September. You'll camp or stay in huts, carrying water-dependent gear and managing navigation through forested sections.
Good to know
Walk April–September for cooler, drier conditions; summer brings heat, humidity and storm risk. Check current bookings, permits and track closures with Queensland Parks and Wildlife or the local council before departure. The walk links village access points; plan resupply stops and arrange transport for this point-to-point route. Fitness should include sustained hill climbing. Creeks provide water but treat it. Leave no trace; camp only at designated sites.
