The Pinnacle (Grampians)
About this walking route
The Pinnacle is the Grampians' most popular peak walk, rising 300 metres above Halls Gap to a dramatic clifftop platform. The 9.6 km circuit traverses the Grand Canyon—a narrow, rocky gorge with ladders and scrambles—then climbs Silent Street's steep stone staircase before reaching the exposed summit lookout. On clear days, views sweep across the park's ridges and the Western District plains below.
Highlights
- Narrow Grand Canyon gorge with fixed ladders and rock handholds
- Silent Street's steep, built stone steps through forest
- Clifftop Pinnacle lookout with 360-degree views
- Grampians ridgeline and distant Western District panorama
- Mix of boulder scrambling, steps and open rock platforms
What to expect
Rocky, steep terrain with sections of loose stone and sustained climbing. The gorge involves ladders, tight rock slots and scrambling; Silent Street is a relentless stone staircase. Exposed cliff sections near the summit—windy and slippery when wet. Starting from Halls Gap car park, the loop is well-marked but unshaded in places. Allow 4–5 hours at a steady pace with breaks for views.
Good to know
Walk year-round, but avoid wet conditions—rock and ladders become treacherous. Peak seasons are spring and autumn; summer afternoons bring crowds. No permits required, but arrive early for car parking in Halls Gap. Bring plenty of water; no reliable sources on track. Grampians National Park has seasonal closures and fire restrictions; check Parks Victoria before visiting. Respect the landscape and other walkers on this busy route.
