Thorsborne Trail
About this walking route
The Thorsborne Trail is a challenging 32 km point-to-point walk down Hinchinbrook Island's east coast, taking 3–4 days through wet tropical rainforest, mangrove swamps and creek systems to beachside camps. Numbers are capped to preserve wilderness character, so permits and bookings are essential. You'll camp on sand beneath Mt Bowen, navigate tidal creek crossings and experience one of Queensland's most remote and demanding coastal bushwalks.
Highlights
- Rainforest canopy and creek ecology in wet tropics
- Remote beach camps with mountain backdrop
- Tidal creek crossings — timing and technique required
- Pristine sandy shores, minimal crowds via permit cap
- Mangrove systems and coastal forest succession
What to expect
Steep descent early, then undulating terrain through dense rainforest with frequent creek crossings — some knee-deep, tide-dependent. Track is rough, muddy and roots dominate. Weather is hot and humid; monsoonal rain is possible. Campsites are designated beach areas with limited shelter. You'll carry water, camp gear and food for 3–4 days. Fitness and creek-crossing confidence are non-negotiable; this is genuine wilderness walking.
Good to know
Dry season (May–September) is essential; wet season risks dangerous floods. Permits are mandatory and numbers capped — book well ahead with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Transport to/from the island (Lucinda Jetty) requires separate ferry or water-taxi arrangement. Carry water-purification capability. Camp only at designated sites, pack all rubbish out, and respect tidal patterns for creek safety. One-way walk requires exit transport planning.
