About this walking route

Valley of the Winds is a 7.4 km loop walk threading between the massive red conglomerate domes of Kata Tjuṯa in the West MacDonnell Ranges. The track climbs to two lookouts offering views across the desert spinifex country and the sheer rock walls that define this sacred landscape. It's a moderate walk that rewards early starts—the park closes the track by mid-morning on hot days to manage heat exposure in this exposed, treeless terrain.

Highlights

  • Red conglomerate domes tower overhead
  • Two summit lookouts with broad desert views
  • Tight valley passages between massive walls
  • Spinifex and desert vegetation throughout
  • Strong sense of geological scale and drama

What to expect

A steady climb into the valley between domes, then a more challenging push to the first lookout with scrambling sections. The return via the second lookout involves exposed ridgeline walking with minimal shade. Red sand and rocky footing; clear sightlines but intense heat from morning onwards. The landscape feels remote and elemental—you're walking through a major sacred site in Anangu country.

Good to know

Start before sunrise or very early morning; the track often closes by 10:00 am or 11:00 am in hot months. Bring 2–3 litres of water per person. No shade, no shelter. Best April–September. Entry is part of Uluru-Kata Tjuṯa National Park; check current access, closures and conditions with the park authority. Respect the spiritual significance of Kata Tjuṯa—stay on track and follow all signage.
