About this walking route

Walls of Jerusalem is a remote alpine circuit in Tasmania's Central Plateau, climbing steeply into a basin ringed by striking dolomite peaks. The walk demands fitness and self-sufficiency—there are no huts, so you'll camp among tarns and pencil pines in one of the state's most austere and rewarding landscapes. The steep approach and exposed ridges mean weather can shift quickly; go prepared for cold, wind and snow even in summer.

Highlights

  • Dolomite peaks and rocky outcrops surrounding the basin
  • High-altitude tarns reflecting alpine scenery
  • Pencil pine woodland and buttongrass moorland
  • Isolation and solitude in a roadless wilderness
  • Challenging scrambling and navigation required

What to expect

A steep, relentless climb on rocky track to gain the plateau, then undulating terrain through tarn country with exposed ridges. Surfaces vary—rock, mud, buttongrass and scree. Expect cold wind, sudden weather changes, and low cloud even in warmer months. This is true alpine walking: you'll carry a full pack including tent and fuel, navigate carefully, and see few others.

Good to know

Walk November to April; snow and ice close the walk in winter. Permit required—book with Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania. Carry tent, stove, food and warm layers; water is available from tarns but must be treated. No facilities at the trailhead. Fitness and navigation skills essential. Leave no trace in this fragile alpine environment; camp away from tarns and pack out all waste.
