About this track

The Kalumburu Road is a formidable 267 km track through the remote northern Kimberley, branching off the Gibb River Road to reach Mitchell Falls and the isolated community of Kalumburu. This is serious outback driving: severe corrugations, sharp rocky terrain, multiple creek crossings and genuine isolation demand a well-equipped, experienced crew. It's a 2–4 day expedition into one of Australia's most rugged and least-travelled country, where self-sufficiency and preparation are non-negotiable.

Highlights

  • Mitchell Falls — iconic tiered waterfall, rewarding short walk from the track
  • Severe corrugations and sharp-edged rock — high puncture risk, carry two spare tyres minimum
  • Remote creek crossings with variable depth — seasonal water flow unpredictable
  • Drysdale River Station — only fuel checkpoint, plan consumption carefully
  • High remoteness — limited comms, EPIRB essential, recovery assistance days away
  • Wet-season closure — May–Sep window only, verify current access before departure

What to expect

Unrelenting corrugations and sharp basalt rock that punish tyres and suspension throughout. Creek crossings are unavoidable; water levels vary with season and recent rainfall. Progress is slow — expect 30–50 km/h averages on good sections. The track is genuinely remote with no facilities beyond Drysdale River Station fuel stop. Navigation is straightforward but exposure is high: breakdowns or serious injury occur far from help. Dust, heat and mechanical stress are constants.

Permits, prep & good to know

  • Permits: Yes — community + Mitchell Plateau — confirm current details before you go.
  • Surface / hazards: Severe.
  • Remoteness: High — travel self-sufficient, ideally in convoy.
  • Carry an EPIRB or satellite communicator, recovery gear, extra fuel and water.

Permits are required from the Kalumburu Aboriginal Community and Mitchell Plateau authorities — confirm current requirements and conditions before departure. The track is closed in the wet season; travel May–September only. Carry a second full fuel load, full water reserves (minimum 150 L), two spare tyres, comprehensive recovery gear and an EPIRB. Convoy travel is strongly advised. Run low tyre pressures on rock sections and monitor fuel consumption at each stop. Notify someone of your route and expected arrival. No dogs without permit approval.
