About this track

The Mitchell Falls Track is an 85 km spur from Port Warrender Road deep into Mitchell River National Park, one of the Kimberley's most remote and punishing drives. It terminates at a short walk to Punamii-Uunpuu (Mitchell Falls), a stunning multi-tiered waterfall and cultural landmark. This is a genuine hard 4WD proposition—severe corrugations, rocky sections and creek crossings demand low-range driving, recovery gear and full self-sufficiency. Between May and September, when seasonal closures lift, it rewards committed explorers with isolation and raw Kimberley beauty.

Highlights

  • Punamii-Uunpuu waterfall — tiered cascade and swimming hole
  • Severe corrugations and rocky terrain — low-range essential
  • Creek crossings; water levels dictate access
  • High remoteness; no fuel, limited water en route
  • Aboriginal cultural site — respect signage and protocols
  • May–September window only; wet season impassable

What to expect

Unrelenting corrugations dominate the first sections; the road deteriorates progressively into rocky, boulder-strewn terrain demanding constant low-range crawling and careful line-choice. Creek crossings are unavoidable; depth and condition vary seasonally. Progress is slow—expect 15–20 km/h averages. The final approach winds through open woodland to the falls walk. Remoteness is absolute: no mobile coverage, no services, no other traffic for stretches. One mechanical failure or navigation error leaves you stranded.

Permits, prep & good to know

  • Permits: Yes — Mitchell River NP — confirm current details before you go.
  • Surface / hazards: Severe.
  • Remoteness: High — travel self-sufficient, ideally in convoy.
  • Carry an EPIRB or satellite communicator, recovery gear, extra fuel and water.

Permits are mandatory—check current availability and closure dates with Mitchell River NP management before departure. Fuel from Drysdale River Station (confirm hours and availability); carry jerry cans. Water supplies are limited; bring 100 L minimum plus filtration. Convoy travel is strongly advised. Essential: dual battery, full recovery kit, sand flags, UHF radio, EPIRB, satellite comms and detailed track notes. Wet season (Oct–Apr) closes the track completely. Depart early, move slowly, and never assume you can turn back quickly. Leave no trace; pack all waste.
