Wineglass Bay & Hazards Beach Circuit
About this walking route
A scenic 11 km circuit that captures Freycinet's essence in a single day. Walk to the iconic Wineglass Bay lookout, descend to the white-sand beach, then return via the narrow isthmus past Hazards Beach. You'll gain 330 m over the opening climb, then enjoy coastal walking with granite peaks framing the views. The circuit avoids the overnight hut crowds while delivering the region's highlight scenery. This is Tasmania's busiest walk for good reason: the bay's horseshoe shape, turquoise water, and quartzite sand make it unmissable. The return leg is quieter, passing the smaller Hazards Beach before rejoining the main trail through low scrub and tea-tree.
Highlights
- Wineglass Bay lookout: mountain views and that famous crescent
- White-sand descent and beach walk at high tide
- Hazards Beach: rockier, less crowded alternative
- Granite peaks and coastal scrub throughout
- Single day allows early start, fewer crowds possible
What to expect
The 3 km approach climbs steadily through dry sclerophyll to the lookout (330 m gain). Descent to the beach is steep and sandy. The return via Hazards Beach follows an isthmus between ocean and bay, with sandy, rooty sections. Granite boulder scrambling near the saddle. Total 4–5 hours at moderate pace. Expect exposed ridges; bring sun protection and water.
Good to know
October–April is best; summer crowds are intense but weather reliable. Winter is quieter but grey. Freycinet National Park is day-walk accessible from the car park; check Parks Tasmania for current entry fees and any seasonal closures. Early morning (6–7 am start) avoids midday crowds. Bring 2+ litres water—no reliable sources on track. Leave nothing; use designated facilities at the car park.
